A série é baseada numa telenovela colombiana, Yo Soy Betty La Fea e é adaptada pela produtora Salma Hayek, cuja companhia de produção, Ventanarosa, se unirá à Touchston Television para produzir este programa de uma hora.A série consagrou-se como um dos grandes destaques desta temporada, com uma média de 13 milhões de telespectadores nos EUA.
